Barb Ward
Woodturner/Carver

Barb Ward is a self-taught woodcarver/woodturner. She lives in a log home on Moss Lake, North Carolina with her husband, Terry, and their two dogs, Harley and Little Bit. Barb is a member of the American Association of Woodturners, the North Carolina Woodturners Association, and the Buffalo Creek Gallery.

At present, my lathe work is comprised primarily of segmented woodturnings. Many are constructed from hundreds of pieces of different types of wood, precisely cut and glued together in intricate patterns. Unlike inlay decoration, the patterns go completely through the turning.

It often takes several weeks to complete a segmented bowl or vase. It's very time consuming, requiring careful planning, precise segment cutting, assembling, and gluing before finally putting the piece on the lathe to turn.

Woodcarving is an experience that goes far beyond just shaping a piece of wood. Each piece of wood has a distinct beauty that can be magnified in a carving. Animal carving offers great opportunities for mastering the challenges of working in three dimension. This is an art form that requires patience and careful study of the subject being carved.
