Painter

Barbara Ghigo was introduced to painting by Nancy Carter who taught many aspiring painters in Cleveland County. Later an interest in portrait and figure drawing was the catalyst to enroll in classes at Cleveland Community College in 1994, studying drawing and painting with Hal Bryant.

More study followed at Central Piedmont Community College with classes in portrait with Rita Alread, oil painting with Elizabeth Ross and life drawing with Kappy McCleneghan. Workshops with Frank Covino in classical portraiture techniques, and with William Schultz and Connie Winters in impressionist painting techniques have been inspirational and classes with Andrew Braitman at Braitman Studio in Charlotte have been influential.

Using color to express the beauty and wonder of the natural world has been central to Barbara's exploration of painting. Sometimes the approach is coloristic and sometimes more tonal, but always color is central to the development of her paintings. Some paintings combine a colorist palette with brush and palette knife application. The appearance of the painting surface and the colors are often as important as the actual subject.
Since September 2000, Barbara has been a part-time instructor at Cleveland Community College through the Continuing Education Department. She teaches two oil painting classes during the fall and spring semesters. She is a member of the Southern Arts Society and Working Artist Guild.
