Hal Holmstrom
Shaker Style Chair Maker

Hal Holmstrom's experience in making Shaker style chairs began with a week long course that he completed in 1999 at the Pleasant Hill shaker Museum near Harrodsburg , Kentucky . The instructor was Mr. Peter Hindle a long time industrial arts instructor and developer of the rotary plane. This tool is used to make the round parts of the chairs. Mr. Hindle is from England and periodically makes trips to the U.S. to teach chair making courses.

In addition to the chair making course completed in 1999 a second course was completed in 2001. Shortly after that, Hal designed a Shaker Low Back chair using references from John Kassay's book on Shaker furniture and he has built a number of this style chair.

Hal continues to modify the methods he learned at Pleasant Hill using various reference materials in order to improve the efficiency in making the chairs. He also plans on designing and building a style of stool and another style chair in the near future. He is relying on 38 years of woodworking experience, college training and his furniture design experience to aid him in this work.

Hal and his wife, Betty moved to Lincolnton in November 2006 from Sebring, Florida. They also maintain a small summer cottage and workshop in Edinboro, Pennsylvania where some of Hal's fabrication work is performed.
