Martha Moore is largely a self-taught painter. There was no art program at her high school in rural Southwest Virginia.

As a teenager, her first art instruction came through UVA extension classes offered locally. Then, at Emory and Henry College, there was, again, no art teacher until her senior year, so her art experience was limited there, too. Martha took a B.A. in English and history and later earned an M.A. in English at East Tennessee State University.

Being a high school teacher, wife, and mother left little time for art over the years. Martha's family moved to Shelby in the early 1980s, and she taught English and European history at Shelby High until 2008.


     
 

In retirement, Martha has returned to art. She paints landscapes in oil and watercolor, often from her travels and from images of the farm where she grew up; her style attempts to capture realistic detail.
